Healthy Gut: The Prebiotic/Probiotic Connection.

Why you need them. Why they work. And what’s the best source for them.

How Important Gut Health Is To Overall Well-being?

  As a health practitioner I can definitely say that healthy Gastro Intestinal (GI) system is a very important factor to a long and healthy life. However, the GI tract is a very neglected part of our bodies - neglected until we get a touch of diarrhea or suffer from several days of constipation.

  Good intestinal health is the most misunderstood and least appreciated aspect of human wellness. If you have it, you're better able to fight off disease. You often have increased energy, more stamina and even a better complexion. The problem is that more than 80% of all people in North America are carrying around from 6 to 25 pounds of undigested waste in their colon and small intestines, resulting in:

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhea

  • Abdominal distention/bloating

  • Less frequent bowel movements

  • Obesity

  • Change in abdominal size and mass

  • Small volume of stool

  • Headache

  • Decreased appetite

  • Indigestion

  • Rectal pain at bowel movement

Probiotics

  The GI tract is more than a tube that runs from our mouth to our anus. The inside of this tube is coated with a thin layer of sticky, viscous mucous. Covering this mucous and imbedded in it are millions and millions of bacteria. From the time we are born to the time we die these bacteria live, grow, carryout their metabolism, and excrete beneficial and non-beneficial compounds into the gut.

 

When we are in good health, the population of bacteria that lives in our gut is said to be in balance - the number of "good bacteria", Probiotics, outnumber the number of "bad bacteria". We feel good; we are able to resist disease and infection because our immune system that is stimulated by intestinal bacteria is functioning well. Beside digestion and absorption, interaction with the body’s immune system is perhaps one of the most important roles that the bacteria that live in our intestines play.

 

WHO defines Probiotics as ‘Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host’.  The most common of these are based in Lactic Acid Bacilli (or LAB). They’ve been used in the food industry for many years. And they’re most commonly found in foods such as yogurt and certain raw (unpasteurized) cheeses.  In their perfect form, they act as a preservative by lowering the pH and creating fewer opportunities for spoilage organisms to grow. Probiotic bacterial cultures are intended to assist the body's naturally occurring gut flora in the process of reestablishing themselves. And such familiar flora as strains of the genera Lactobacillus (acidophilus) and Bifidobacterium are the most widely used and best-known probiotic bacteria.

 

When the friendly flora decreases in dramatic number it creates a seed bed for such invasive elements as Candida albicans to enter the human system through the digestive system.  And if you think this is a rarity, think again, because Candida is a fungus that is replete in every processed food we eat.

 

Excessive Candida in the system is believed to be a root cause of such conditions as chronic fatigue syndrome, endometriosis, stomach ulcers, Crohn’s Disease, and type II diabetes, just to name a few.

 

Normally, our intestinal tract has up to 3 pounds of probiotics or good bacteria. Whenever you take antibiotics or strong drugs, they get killed off. This can affect digestion and absorption of nutrients. These bacteria produce by-products that are natural antibiotics and keep yeast and fungi at bay. Probiotics make short-chain fatty acids, one of which, butyrate, has been linked to prevention or reduction of colon cancer. When buying them, look carefully at the brand and look for research done on it. Some brands of probiotics are really dead or contain only small amounts of bacteria. I recommend Natren’s probiotics as the best on the market.

 

Many factors affect the population of intestinal bacteria including diet, age, sex, and use of drugs, surgery, and some diseases. Maintaining a proper balance of bacteria in our GI tract is key to good gut health. If our guts are healthy, we will be healthy.

 

Prebiotics

 

Prebiotics are non-digestible food components belonging to the fiber family that stimulate the growth or activity a number of microorganisms of the intestinal flora – the friendly bacteria (probiotics).

 

Maintenance of a healthy gut flora is essential to stem this rising tide of bacteria and fungi. It is, however, dependent on many factors. It is especially influenced by the quality of food intake, including probiotic-rich foods. Unfortunately, our intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, though they may prevent additional Candida build-up, do practically nothing to get rid of it. What’s more, if you eat a probiotic rich food such as yogurt, you run a double risk. One is the fact that almost all fruit or flavored yogurts contain sugar, which is a growth medium for Candida. And, even if you ate only pure organic yogurt, you would have to partake of at least two quarts a day just to get the friendly probiotics you would get from one properly formulated strain of acidophilus.

 

The fact is no probiotics can get the job done when it comes to the two steps necessary to secure maximum intestinal health without the help of essential prebiotics. And there have been virtually no effective prebiotic formulations synthesized from a number of foods, until very recently.

 

Most prebiotics are carbohydrates, such as oligosaccharides, but may also be introduced into the system along with proteolytic enzymes and other amino acids.

 

By definition, prebiotics cannot be restricted to any particular bacterial group. But properly introduced into the system, they should act to help increase the number of bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria (such as lactobacillus acidophilus) into a healthy digestive system.

 

Typical dietary sources of prebiotics are soybeans, Jerusalem artichokes, raw oats, unrefined wheat and unrefined barley. They are also found naturally in onions, artichokes, bananas, chicory, and leeks. But the drawbacks here are twofold:

 

  • You have to eat massive quantities of these foods (about 10 pounds a day) to get the prebiotic support you truly need to help balance your system.

  • “Prebiotics” from forced commercial processing often carry sugars and preservatives that are a mixed blessing in the short term and may be simply unhealthy in the long run.

About Dr. Michio Kushi


Born in 1926 in Wakayama prefecture. Graduated from Department of Political Science, University of Tokyo Faculty of Law, and University of Tokyo Graduate School. Dr. Kushi studied the possibility for establishing world government and world federation for global peace. He moved to the United States in November 1949 and started to study at Department of Political Science, Columbia University Graduate School. The dietary culture of the ancient Greek and China, and thoughts of Yukikazu Sakurazawa of Sekai Seifu Kyokai had impacts on him. Dr. Kushi decided to devote himself to significant modification of the human life and global dietary pattern. He drew up the standard macrobiotic diet focusing on a grain- and vegetable-based meal, with his wife, Aveline (1923 to 2001).

Over 50 years, he has been vigorously engaged in teaching and educational activities in the entire US.  In 1978, he founded the Kushi Institute in Brookline, Massachusetts. In 1995, Dr. Kushi received the Award of Excellence from the United Nations Society of Writers. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize with recommendation from volunteers of the American Bar Association. In 1999, the National Museum of American History in the US (more widely known as the Smithsonian Institute) acknowledged permanent preservation of Kushi's family collection. Currently, Dr. Kushi holds various important positions such as the President of Kushi Foundation, Inc., and President of the Green Cross Group, Japan.

What is the origin of cancer or where does cancer begin?


Cancerous tissue, above all other consequences of choice, has countless secondary causes. But even for a cancerous condition there is only ONE PRIME ORIGIN and CAUSE.

The prime origin and cause of cancerous tissue is the over-acidification of the blood then the tissues due to lifestyle and dietary choices. A cancerous tissue begins with our choices of what we eat, what we drink, what we think and how we live.

Cancer is a liquid and this liquid is a toxic waste product of diet and metabolism or energy consumption.

In 1966, Dr. Otto Warburg, who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1931 for his discovery of the cause of cancer delivered a lecture at an annual meeting of Nobelists at Lindau, Germany. In his speech he described the primal cause of cancer as follows:

"The prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation. All normal body cells are thus obligate aerobes, whereas all cancer cells are partial anaerobes. From the standpoint of the physics and chemistry of life this difference between normal and cancer cells is so great that one can scarily picture a greater difference. Oxygen gas, the donor of energy in plants and animals is dethroned in the cancer cells and replaced by an energy yielding reaction of the lowest living forms; namely, a fermentation of glucose."

The following is a summary of understanding cancerous tissues:

1) Cancer is not a cell but a poisonous acidic liquid.

2) A cancer cell is a cell that has been spoiled or poisoned by metabolic or gastrointestinal acids.

3) A tumor is the body's protective mechanism to encapsulate spoiled or poisoned cells from excess acid that has not been properly eliminated through urination, perspiration, defecation or respiration.

4) The tumor is the body's solution to protect healthy cells and tissues.

5) Cancer is a systemic acidic condition that settles at the weakest parts of the body - not a localized problem that metastases.

6) Metastases is localized acids spoiling other cells much like a rotten apple spoiling a bushel of healthy apples.

7) There is no such thing as a cancer cell. A cancer cell was once a healthy cell that has been spoiled from acid.

8) The tumor is not the problem but the solution to protect healthy cells and tissues from being spoiled from other rotting cells and tissues.

9) The only solution to the acidic liquids that poison body cells causing the affect that medical savants call cancer is to alkalize and energize the body.

10) In conclusion, the human body is alkaline by design and acidic by function!

If we desire a healthy body we must maintain that alkaline design.

Does diet and lifestyle have anything to do with cancer?

Absolutely! Cancer is not something we get it is something we do as a consequence of daily choice of what we eat, what we drink, what we think and how we live. We either have an alkaline lifestyle and diet and enjoy a fit and healthy body or we have an acidic lifestyle and diet and experience the aches, pains and suffering from metabolic acids.

The former US Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, had this to say about diet:

"YOUR CHOICE OF DIET CAN INFLUENCE YOUR LONG TERM HEALTH PROSPECTS MORE THAN ANY OTHER ACTION YOU MIGHT TAKE."

If cancer is preventable how do we prevent it?

The cure for cancerous tissue will not be found in its treatment but in its prevention. That prevention can only be obtained by making healthier lifestyle and dietary choices. A cancerous condition is the consequence of choice. For example, if you want to reduce your risk for cancerous tissue of the lung by 100%, then stop smoking and stop associating or working around people that do smoke. Secondary smoke is just as acidic and damaging to the lung tissue. If you don't want a cancerous liver then stop drinking alcohol and carbonated drinks. If you don't want a cancerous pancreas then stop eating the acid sugar. If you don't want a cancerous bowel then stop eating animal protein.
It is that simple.

If I have cancerous tissues do I have to do radiation, chemotherapy or surgery?

Now that you understand that cancer is not a cell(s) but an acidic liquid that spoils cells it doesn't make a lot of sense to radiate or chemically destroy cancerous cells with more poison. Logic should tell you that radiation or acidic chemical therapies may only make things worse. But there are situations where the tissue has become so cancerous or acidic that it needs to be cut out so it doesn't spoil more of the healthy tissue(s). This is when surgery can save lives and should only be used as a last resort.

Cancerous tissue is not something you get -- it is something you do as a consequence of daily choice of what you eat, what you drink, what you THINK, and how you live.

You either have an alkaline lifestyle and diet and enjoy a fit and healthy body, or you have an acidic lifestyle and diet and experience or will experience the aches, pains and suffering from metabolic acids -- your own toxic waste products that are absorbed into your tissues.

This is your life and it is your free choice -- choose wisely. Prevention is the key to a healthy and fit body.

If I have cancer, such as colon, lung, or prostate cancer can I reverse it naturally?

The answer to this question is absolutely! Once you understand the cause of ALL cancerous tissues as latent tissue acidosis you can then begin the process of reversing, regenerating and preventing the consequences of acidic choices by making healthier alkaline choices. 

Is there an inexpensive way to prevent or reverse cancerous tissue?

The cure for cancer is found in its prevention not in its treatment. It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. An inexpensive way to prevent and/or reverse cancerous tissue is to maintain the alkaline design of the human body through lifestyle and diet.
 
When you understand that there is only one sickness and one dis-ease caused by the over-acidification of the blood and then tissues due to an acidic lifestyle and diet -- then you can understand why there is only one treatment. What is the formula for preventing and/or reversing cancerous tissue?

Here is the secret formula - I call this formula the five (5) "B's":

A healthy BASE diet gives rise to healthy BOWELS. Healthy BOWELS creates healthy BLOOD. Healthy BLOOD creates a healthy BRAIN and a healthy BRAIN creates a healthy BODY.


What impact do your emotions have on preventing, causing or reversing cancerous tissue?

Emotions are energy in motion - "E" motion. NO "E" motion can take place without energy and when energy is being consumed acids are produced as a by-product. Just like a car when it consumes gasoline for "E" motion, an acidic waste product is produced - carbon monoxide. It is common knowledge that carbon monoxide is a toxic acid and if not eliminated through the exhaust system of the car the car would immediately shut down.

And so it is with us. Our thoughts, our "E"motions require energy and energy consumed produces metabolic acids. If acids from our thoughts are not eliminated through urination, perspiration, respiration or defecation (our exhaust systems) they will make us sick, tired and cancerous. Since you know that cancer is an acidic liquid you now know that you can cause cancerous tissue with your thoughts, or should
we say your "E" motions.

When you are constantly in your thoughts - negative thoughts - they give rise to feelings like hatred, revenge, anger or fear. These thought provoked negative feelings can lower the pH of your urine (the urine pH indicates tissue pH) by over 100 times. This can cause the body to go into preservation mode 24/7, using up your alkaline buffering reserves. Once the alkaline reserves are used up the body goes into body wasting from all the acids. Your body is being tenderized and fermented by your own acidic waste products generated from "E" motions.

The "E" motion formula is as follows: thoughts = feelings or "E" motions = acids or negative thoughts = negative feelings or negative "E" motions = excessive acids which can effect the alkaline design of your body.

Your alkaline or healthy thoughts create less acid then your acidic or negative thoughts.

If you want to stop the pain; if you want to stop the degeneration; if you want to stop the fermenting from your own acidic waste products you have to slow down or even stop the "e" motions, especially the negative "e" motions. Your negative thoughts could be killing you. When you are continually in your thoughts you are having a "thought attack." And "thought attacks" can lead to heart attacks and cancerous tissue.

In the case with your thoughts or "E" motions, less is more and more is less.

To prevent or reverse cancerous tissue you must turn off the negative thoughts, the stories, the movies running in your head. When you turn off the thoughts you reduce acidity, and when you reduce acidity you prevent or reverse sickness, disease and even cancerous tissue.

How do your thoughts impact the success for the treatment of cancerous tissue?

It has been said that out of 20 people diagnosed and treated for cancer, 90% of them will die from the fear of the cancer rather than the dis-ease.

F.E.A.R. is an acronym that stands for, False Evidence Appearing Real. Many of us live our lives in F.E.A.R. rather than in F.A.I.T.H. - the First Attribute In Thoughtful Health.

When your thoughts move away from F.E.A.R. and move towards F.A.I.T.H., your tissue alkalinity increases and your tissue acidity decreases making your treatments for cancerous tissue more effective.

When you are living your life in F.A.I.T.H. you are living in the present, or in the NOW. Living in the NOW is alkalizing, energizing and healthful. YOU are not concerned with the past nor are you concerned with the future. Living your life in the past or in the future is a F.E.A.R. based life and is highly acidic. Living in the past or the future creates "e" motions that lead to the feelings of regret, worry, and anxiety that can make you more sick, tired and cancerous. Your treatments for cancerous tissue will not be effective, or as effective when you are thinking in the past or future living in a state of "E" motions of F.E.A.R. rather than the "E" motions of F.A.I.T.H. - hope, love and charity.

Can you cause cancerous cells and tissues with your thoughts?

Absolutely! Our thoughts require energy and energy metabolized creates acid. If the acidic waste products from your thoughts are not eliminated through urination, persperiation, respiration or defication they will be absorbed into your tissues to protect and maintain the delicate pH of the blood at 7.365. Acids absorbed into the tissues will burn, ferment, spoil and even rot any cells and tissues they come into contact with. Therefore, metabolic acids when absorbed into the tissues will cause cancerous tissues.

How does my personal relationship with friends, family and/or spouse prevent or cause cancerous tissue?

Eckhart Tolle had this to say about our thoughts which can affect your personal relationships that in turn may either prevent or cause cancerous tissues:

"The beginning of freedom is the realization that you are not "the thinker." The moment you start watching the thinker, a higher level of consciousness becomes activated. You then begin to realize that there is a vast realm of intelligence beyond thought, that thought is only a tiny aspect of that intelligence. You also realize that all the things that truly matter - beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace, arise
from beyond the mind. You begin to awaken."

This awakening comes through a process of making alkaline lifestyle and dietary choices. When you become more alkaline in your thoughts, words and deeds, you begin to reconnect to your true self - you are less acidic or less cancerous. When you are reconnected physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually you will begin to awaken. When awake, your "e" motions turn to feelings of joy, hope, love and charity for self, and then for your neighbors, friends, family and spouse. You realize that you are a spiritual being having a physical experience rather than a physical being having a spiritual experience. You are whole! You are alkaline! You are healthy!

How to Stop Procrastinating

Overcoming the Self-Sabotaging Habit of Procrastination

  Is there something nagging at you right now? Something you know you should be doing (or long since should have completed), but because of the dreaded “P-word” – procrastination – have avoided entirely?

In America, procrastination is on the rise. While only 5 percent of us considered ourselves procrastinators in 1978, in 2007 26 percent of us say we procrastinate regularly, according to a study by University of Calgary professor Piers Steel.

At the heart of all this avoidance, says Steel, is the temptation to do something else, which in the modern day is everywhere. Think about the many alluring things you could be doing right now instead of that thing you should be working on…surfing the Web for funny videos, making a sandwich, catching a rerun of your favorite sitcom…the possibilities are endless.

Aside from temptation, people procrastinate based on the task’s sense of immediacy, its value and whether they think they can finish it, Steel says. What’s worse, though, is that procrastinating is not good for your physical or mental health.

"People who procrastinate tend to be less healthy, less wealthy and less happy," Steel said in a Fox News report.

Of course, one of the worst things about procrastination is all the time you spend worrying, begrudging and dreading the task. Most likely, you put a lot more effort into thinking about how much you don’t want to do it than it takes to actually put your nose to the grindstone and complete it.

How to Stop Procrastinating

Most procrastinators would like to stop so they, too, can enjoy the freedom and elation that comes with having your work done…and therefore having some time to play (without worries!).

How can this be done? By letting go of the feelings of resistance that are keeping you from completing your tasks.   1. Water is the substance of life. Life can not exist without water. We must constantly be adding fresh water to our body in order to keep it properly hydrated. Water can be a miracle cure for many common ailments such as headaches, fatigue, joint pain, and much more. We can go for weeks without food, but only 3 days without water!

  2. The body is comprised of 80% water. Water makes up nearly 85 percent of your brain, about 80 percent of your blood and about 70 percent of your lean muscle. (Because there are a lot of tissues that have less water, the average is about 50 percent).

  4. Water plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

  5. Water is essential for proper digestion, nutrient absorption and chemical reactions. The carbohydrates and proteins that our bodies use as food are metabolized and transported by water in the bloodstream. No less important is the ability of water to transport waste material out of our bodies.

  6. Water is essential for proper circulation in the body. The levels of oxygen in the bloodstream are greater when the body is well hydrated. The more oxygen the body has readily available the more fat it will burn for energy without the presence of oxygen the body cannot utilize stored fat for energy efficiently. Not only will the body burn more fat when well hydrated but because there are increased oxygen levels you will also have more energy.

  7. Water helps remove toxins from the body, in particular from the digestive tract. Water suppresses the appetite naturally and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits.

In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

  1. Water regulates the body's cooling system. Sports drinks are useful when consumed after or during vigorous and prolonged exercise in high heat. But most experts agree that water works better than carbohydrates or sugared beverages for moderate exercise. For instance, if you drink 12 ounces of plain water, your body will absorb 8 ounces of it within 15 minutes.

If you drink 12 ounces of a 10% sugar solution, less than 1 ounce will be absorbed in the same period. The typical soft drink is a 10 to 12% sugar solution.

In the Air

On April 9, 2006, the Health Effects Institute 'A Partnership of the Environmental Protection Agency and Industry' held a conference examining state air quality and reported that sources such as coal, motor vehicles, and residential oil are emitting metals such as Cu (copper), Zn (zinc), V (vanadium) into the air at unhealthy levels.

Over time, these metals accumulate in the tissues of your lungs, heart, and liver and in your blood causing numerous health problems including allergies, respiratory, and cardiovascular disease.

In the Kitchen

Walk into any store selling cookware and you will see a full spectrum of metals. From aluminum to stainless steel, you have probably been told that your exposure to these metals is low -- below the level of risk. But consider for a moment the frequency and duration of the use of this cookware. Over time, the accumulated levels of these metals can rise well above risk levels, compromising your health. Your body is simply not equipped to expel these metals (on its own) so they continue to accumulate in your body.

Everyone knows about the dangers of aluminum cookware, but what about stainless steel? Stainless steel cookware is the most popular cookware in North America; it's inexpensive, long-lasting …but surprise, still potentially hazardous with long term use. Do you believe all you hear in the media?

Once again people who know nothing about nutrition have made their pronouncements. And once again, the mainstream media has jumped on the bandwagon spreading what amounts to partial truths and out-and-out nonsense to a vulnerable public about salt and coffee.

Salt

In case you missed the news, the AMA (those masters of health and nutrition) has publicly come out against salt. They want it taken off the FDA's safe list, packed in red containers to signify its danger, and positioned as a regulated substance.

Who are these people? On what basis do they make these pronouncements? They don't study health and nutrition in med school. And they're always getting it wrong. Remember, these are the people who told you:

  • To eat margarine instead of butter -- until they discovered trans fatty acids.

  • To eat vegetable oil instead of saturated fats -- thereby exacerbating the real problem, the imbalance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids.

  • That you didn't need to supplement because your everyday diet has all the vitamins and minerals you need for perfect health. As if.

  • Etc. Etc. Etc.

So what have they got wrong this time. Quite simply, that not all salt is the same. As far as the body is concerned, there is no connection between the chemically cleansed, sodium chloride table salt you buy in the supermarket and the mineral rich organic sea salt available in health food stores. One kills you; the other heals you. In fact, it's essential for life. But of course, that distinction was not factored into the AMA's recommendation. And once again, they are going to harm countless numbers of people by making pronouncements outside their area of expertise. Keep in mind the average doctor takes one course in nutrition in medical school -- that's a total of 6-8 hours. If you read two good books on the subject, you know more than 99% of all doctors -- and yet the media has dubbed them experts on the subject.

Coffee

Over the last couple of weeks, the media has been running with the story that high coffee consumption (6 or more cups per day) can cut the risk of diabetes in women by some 22%. This confirms a Harvard School of Public Health study two years ago that showed a 50% reduction for men. But why drink coffee? You can drop your risk to close to zero, by merely changing your diet to minimize consumption of high glycemic foods and consuming a few protective supplements.

But even more important. Although coffee may help with diabetes, it carries a slew of health risks in its own right.

  • Caffeine is addictive, utilizing the same mechanisms as amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin.

  • It promotes anxiety, mood swings, irritability, and depression.

  • It exhausts the adrenal glands.

  • It increases the risk of arterial inflammation and the incidence of heart attacks by some 30%.

And decaf has its own problems

  • Studies prove it raises LDL cholesterol levels

4. Clear your mind.

Doctors Are The Third Leading Cause of Death in the US, Causing 225,000 Deaths Every Year

This article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) is the best article I have ever seen written in the published literature documenting the tragedy of the traditional medical paradigm.

This information is a follow up of the Institute of Medicine report, which hit the papers in December of last year, but the data was hard to reference as it was not in peer-reviewed journal. Now it is published in JAMA, which is the most widely circulated medical periodical in the world.

The author is Dr. Barbara Starfield of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health and she desribes how the US health care system may contribute to poor health.

ALL THESE ARE DEATHS PER YEAR:

12,000 -- unnecessary surgery

7,000 -- medication errors in hospitals

20,000 -- other errors in hospitals

80,000 -- infections in hospitals

106,000 -- non-error, negative effects of drugs

These total to 225,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic causes!!

What does the word iatrogenic mean? This term is defined as induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy. Used especially of a complication of treatment.

Dr. Starfield offers several warnings in interpreting these numbers:

First, most of the data are derived from studies in hospitalized patients.

Second, these estimates are for deaths only and do not include negative effects that are associated with disability or discomfort.

Third, the estimates of death due to error are lower than those in the IOM report.

If the higher estimates are used, the deaths due to iatrogenic causes would range from 230,000 to 284,000. In any case, 225,000 deaths per year constitutes the third leading cause of death in the United States, after deaths from heart disease and cancer. Even if these figures are overestimated, there is a wide margin between these numbers of deaths and the next leading cause of death (cerebrovascular disease).

Another analysis concluded that between 4% and 18% of consecutive patients experience negative effects in outpatient settings, with:

116 million extra physician visits

77 million extra prescriptions

17 million emergency department visits

8 million hospitalizations

3 million long-term admissions

199,000 additional deaths

$77 billion in extra costs

The high cost of the health care system is considered to be a deficit, but seems to be tolerated under the assumption that better health results from more expensive care.

However, evidence from a few studies indicates that as many as 20% to 30% of patients receive inappropriate care.

An estimated 44,000 to 98,000 among them die each year as a result of medical errors.

This might be tolerated if it resulted in better health, but does it? Of 13 countries in a recent comparison, the United States ranks an average of 12th (second from the bottom) for 16 available health indicators.

More specifically, the ranking of the US on several indicators was:

13th (last) for low-birth-weight percentages

13th for neonatal mortality and infant mortality overall

11th for postneonatal mortality

13th for years of potential life lost (excluding external causes)

11th for life expectancy at 1 year for females, 12th for males

10th for life expectancy at 15 years for females, 12th for males

10th for life expectancy at 40 years for females, 9th for males

7th for life expectancy at 65 years for females, 7th for males

3rd for life expectancy at 80 years for females, 3rd for males

10th for age-adjusted mortality

The poor performance of the US was recently confirmed by a World Health Organization study, which used different data and ranked the United States as 15th among 25 industrialized countries.

There is a perception that the American public "behaves badly" by smoking, drinking, and perpetrating violence." However the data does not support this assertion.

The proportion of females who smoke ranges from 14% in Japan to 41% in Denmark; in the United States, it is 24% (fifth best). For males, the range is from 26% in Sweden to 61% in Japan; it is 28% in the United States (third best).

The US ranks fifth best for alcoholic beverage consumption.

The US has relatively low consumption of animal fats (fifth lowest in men aged 55-64 years in 20 industrialized countries) and the third lowest mean cholesterol concentrations among men aged 50 to 70 years among 13 industrialized countries.

These estimates of death due to error are lower than those in a recent Institutes of Medicine report, and if the higher estimates are used, the deaths due to iatrogenic causes would range from 230,000 to 284,000.

Even at the lower estimate of 225,000 deaths per year, this constitutes the third leading cause of death in the US, following heart disease and cancer.

Lack of technology is certainly not a contributing factor to the US's low ranking.

Among 29 countries, the United States is second only to Japan in the availability of magnetic resonance imaging units and computed tomography scanners per million population. 17

Japan, however, ranks highest on health, whereas the US ranks among the lowest.

It is possible that the high use of technology in Japan is limited to diagnostic technology not matched by high rates of treatment, whereas in the US, high use of diagnostic technology may be linked to more treatment.

Supporting this possibility are data showing that the number of employees per bed (full-time equivalents) in the United States is highest among the countries ranked, whereas they are very low in Japan, far lower than can be accounted for by the common practice of having family members rather than hospital staff provide the amenities of hospital care.

Folks, this is what they call a "Landmark Article". Only several ones like this are published every year. One of the major reasons it is so huge as that it is published in JAMA which is the largest and one of the most respected medical journals in the entire world.

I did find it most curious that the best wire service in the world, Reuter's, did not pick up this article. I have no idea why they let it slip by.

I would encourage you to bookmark this article and review it several times so you can use the statistics to counter the arguments of your friends and relatives who are so enthralled with the traditional medical paradigm. These statistics prove very clearly that the system is just not working. It is broken and is in desperate need of repair.

I was previously fond of saying that drugs are the fourth leading cause of death in this country. However, this article makes it quite clear that the more powerful number is that doctors are the third leading cause of death in this country killing nearly a quarter million people a year. The only more common causes are cancer and heart disease.

This statistic is likely to be seriously underestimated as much of the coding only describes the cause of organ failure and does not address iatrogenic causes at all.

Japan seems to have benefited from recognizing that technology is wonderful, but just because you diagnose something with it, one should not be committed to undergoing treatment in the traditional paradigm. Their health statistics reflect this aspect of their philosophy as much of their treatment is not treatment at all, but loving care rendered in the home.

Care, not treatment, is the answer. Drugs, surgery and hospitals are rarely the answer to chronic health problems. Facilitating the God-given healing capacity that all of us have is the key. Improving the diet, exercise, and lifestyle are basic.

Effective interventions for the underlying emotional and spiritual wounding behind most chronic illness are also important clues to maximizing health and reducing disease.

Bob Proctor from “The Secret” Shares His Insights on Learning, Creating Prosperity & The Law of Attraction

At the start of the film, he emphatically and enthusiastically states, "The Secret is The Law of Attraction." If you were like me, your eyes were glued to the television screen from that moment on, as you soaked in every word that followed. Bob Proctor is one of a select few people who have thoroughly understood and successfully applied The Law of Attraction (explained in detail in the film, 'The Secret'), transforming his early life, consisting of no formal education and no business connections or experience, into the story of a self-made multi-millionaire who travels the globe teaching people how to re-condition and re-program themselves for ultimate success in every facet of their lives. In this interview, Bob Proctor explains in great detail, the fundamental false wiring that causes most people to not reach their personal and professional goals. He also explains the practical techniques that you can put into practice today, to begin to correct that original conditioning, and start to program yourself for abundance and success in any area of your life that you wish.

I requested this interview with Bob Proctor with the notion of sharing his remarkable insights with our readers. I hope it does just that!

PR.com (Allison Kugel): I watched The Secret for the very first time this past December, and I was thoroughly mesmerized. I literally didn't blink, or move, or get up for water. It was at a time in my life when I was going through quite a bit and it really did put me on the path to correcting that. I first became aware of you through watching the documentary The Secret. How did the producers of The Secret become aware of you?

Bob Proctor: We have people in Australia. The guy who you see [in the movie] who talks about the parking space in the film, he carries our stuff in Australia and we work with him. They had heard of me and he gave them my cell phone number. It was really a rather strange situation, the way it all came together. He also gave Rhonda Byrne (producer of 'The Secret'), a copy of my book, You Were Born Rich. I wrote it years ago. The idea behind it is that everyone is born with deep reservoirs of talent and ability within them. In other words, that's their riches and it's a matter of developing that. He gave her a copy of the book. That's the only book, apparently, that she took on the plane with her when she flew over to America. She read it all the way over. When she got here to shoot this film, she wanted me in it. Her sister Glenda was traveling with her. They had a crew. Glenda phoned my cell phone but the message was very garbled; it wasn't easy to understand. I didn't delete it, but I didn't get it either. This went on for three of four weeks. I said [to the president of my company], Gina Hayden, "Gina, I think this woman's name is Glenda and I think this is the phone number. Would you please phone and see what this is about? It mentioned something, I think, about a film." They said that they really wanted me in this film but that the crew was going back to Australia next week. She said that they were shooting all weekend in Aspen, Colorado. Gina said, "Isn't that strange? Bob is doing a seminar this weekend in Aspen." And I hadn't been to Aspen for two or three years. So I ended up right next door to where they were shooting. I just went in and sat down and went to work.

PR.com: Did they shoot you all at one time, and they just cut it up?

Bob Proctor: Yes. The amazing part of this… no one had a script… no one! It was a little hotel room that they were shooting in. Of course there's camera equipment everywhere and lights, shadowing for lights and you had to watch or you'd trip over something in the room, it was so small. They asked a couple of questions and I would answer them as if they weren't questions; just stating things. I talked to them for a couple hours, just explaining everything about the mind, the world that we live in and our relationship with why things happen the way they do. That was it, and I left. She said, "You'll hear from us." That was in June [of 2005] and then the following February of 2006, I got a DVD of The Secret, by Fed Ex. I didn't even put it on right away. Finally, I said to my wife, "Let's see what this is." Well, I just about fell off the sofa, I couldn't believe it!

PR.com: Because you were so moved by it?

Bob Proctor: I really was! I've been in this business and studying this since 1961, and I worked for five years with Nightingale-Conant in Chicago. Nightingale-Conant is the leader in personal development programs and products. I spent 5 years with them in the sixties and early seventies when this industry was really just in its rompers, and I'd never seen anything like [The Secret]. It is without question, the best production, and it gets the idea across better than anything I've ever seen.

PR.com: Who coined the term "The Secret?"

Bob Proctor: They did. Well actually if you go back to 1959, Earl Nightingale made a recording, The Strangest Secret. He says it's strange that it's a secret, because it's so obvious. But he said it is virtually a secret, because so few people understand it. It's that we become what we think about.

(After our interview, Bob sent me a copy of Earl Nightingale's revolutionary audio recording, 'The Strangest Secret.' As I listened to this man speak on the mechanics of how we become what we think about, and the power of positive imagery and emotional conditioning, I was agape at the notion that Mr. Nightingale possessed the wherewithal to come to understand such progressive ideas, back in the 1950s. He was truly ahead of his time and most likely what many people would have labeled a radical thinker, much to their own detriment. Even in 1959, a million people did see its genius, making his the biggest selling spoken word audio recording of that time, and earning Mr. Nightingale a gold record.)

PR.com: Do we become what we think about as the result of… we think positive thoughts and then we feel happier and more confident, and people are attracted to that? As a result, we tend to make more positive friends, more positive colleagues…?

Bob Proctor: Well that's the philosophic side of it, but I believe there is a more scientific side of it.

PR.com: Right. That's what I was going to ask you… or is it literal, where there is actual science…?

Bob Proctor: It's literal. Come back for a moment to 1959, because I think it's an important part of this. Earl Nightingale made this record (The Strangest Secret) in 1959. I worked with them in the early seventies, when Columbia Records gave them a Gold Record for it, because it was the only record outside of the entertainment industry that sold over a million copies. The Strangest Secret, was that we become what we think about. Now that is the one point that all great philosophers, avatars, and leaders have agreed on. They've disagreed on virtually everything else, but on that one point, they're all in agreement. When you think… your brain, first of all, is an electronic switching station. You are not your brain, Allison. You have a brain. You're not Allison. Allison is your name. If I say, "Who are you?" you would say, "I'm Allison." But you're really not. That's your name. You may point to your body and say, "This is me." But that's really not true either. You probably have a car, a home, and clothes. These are all things you have, but it's not you. And you… when you think, you activate brain cells. Think of your car for a moment, and an image of your car will come on the screen of your mind. What color is your car?

PR.com: Silver.

Bob Proctor: What color is the interior?

PR.com: Black.

(Bob continues to ask me more questions which included inquiring about the colors of my front door and the refrigerator in my kitchen. I answer his questions, eagerly awaiting his explanation. I am becoming acutely aware of the pictures that are flashing, one by one, in my mind's eye. I begin to get an inkling of where he is going with this exercise.)

Bob Proctor: You see things in your mind, don't you? You had to see your car. When I said, "Think of your car," what I am doing is, I am activating vocal cords. I am setting up a vibration… it's actually a light message. Your hearing sense is picking it up. It's going firing down a nerve passageway and striking a group of cells in your brain. And when it hits those cells in your brain, they are activated and the picture that's in them flashes on the screen of your mind. We went from your car to your door to your refrigerator. We could go from your stove to your clothes closet to your bed. You see how the pictures keep jumping on the screen of your mind? That's what language is. Language activates cells of recognition in your brain. Every cell has a positive and a negative pole. What do you like most about your car?

PR.com: The drive.

Bob Proctor: What do you dislike most about it?

PR.com: It could have more traction in bad weather.

Bob Proctor: There you saw the positive and the negative side of your car. Well your car just is. Your car's not a positive or a negative. There are people that would like the fact that it skids around because they find that fun. You don't find it fun. So there's positive and negative pole in your brain, in those cells that are clumped together. It's a cluster of cells in your brain that have pictures of your car in it, and you can activate what's good and what's bad in it, can't you?

PR.com: Yes.

Bob Proctor: That's true with everything. That's true with the city you live in, the job you have, your relationships with the people you're related to; you can activate positive or negative poles in the cells. When you do, you set up a vibration in your body. If you hold your hand in front of you and look at it, it's a molecular structure. It's a mass of molecules at a very high speed of vibration. It looks solid, but the truth is, it's not. It's a mass of energy that's vibrating, and when you leave it, it's still going to vibrate. The body in a coffin is moving, if you looked at it through the proper microscope you would see that, or it would never change to dust. See, everything in the universe vibrates. Well your mind and body vibrate. Your mind is activity. Your brain is the physical manifestation if that activity, as the rest of your body is. But you have the ability to activate brain cells and set up a vibration. Now the vibration that you're in most of the time is going to dictate the kind of people that are attracted to you, and that you're attracted to. If you're an upbeat, positive, gregarious individual you're not going to want to be hanging out with people that are always depressed or introverted. That doesn't mean you're never around them, but you're not going to be attracted to them. We attract everything into our life, and that's how we attract it: according to the vibration we're in. If you were raised with the idea of poverty, you've probably got that idea fixed in your subconscious mind. You could work your butt off all your life and you're going to stay poor.

PR.com: Is that because you are sending vibrations out into the universe? In other words, is it literal? Are my vibrations literally connecting to other vibrations in the universe that are arranging the universe in that way?

Bob Proctor: Absolutely. But, you see, it has to do with awareness. What you have to do is raise your level of conscious awareness. As I am explaining some of these things, you're developing an awareness. You're becoming aware of something about Allison. How old are you?

PR.com: 32.

Bob Proctor: Isn't it amazing that there are things about you that you don't even know, and you're 32 years old?! You're living in one of the most advanced countries in the world. How does that happen? Well because we're never taught these things. You go through school and learn nothing about this. You don't learn it at home. You see, everything in life is about awareness. We've always been able to have the Internet. We've just become aware of it. What we are doing is developing a greater awareness all the time, and as you develop a greater awareness, you start to see things that you couldn't see before.

PR.com: I'm interested in your particular background, because I read that you didn't have a formal education. You didn't continue High School. And you then met the gentleman whom you were referring to before (Earl Nightingale) which set you on this path. How did these events transpire in your life?

Bob Proctor: I was on the fire department in a suburb of Toronto. I probably thought I was going to stay there for the rest of my life. It was the best job I'd ever had. I had just worked in factories and bars and things like that, prior. There was a man I met, and he was a very upbeat guy and he was always helping people to do better than they were doing. It was his way of life. And he got me to read Napoleon Hill's book, Think and Grow Rich. I had never read a book up until that point, and I was 26. I read that, and it was like it set something on fire inside of me. I had no formal education. There were all kinds of words in it that I didn't even understand. I had become very friendly with dictionaries, and I would have to dig out a dictionary and find out, "What's this word mean, what's that word mean?" He said, "If you do exactly what this author says, you're life will start to change." What I really wanted was money. I was earning four thousand dollars a year at the time, but I owed six. So my life was constantly trying to figure out how to take care of this debt and that debt. Well as long as you're thinking "debt," you're going to stay in it, but I didn't understand any of that. I set a goal of having twenty-five thousand dollars, and I didn't believe it. He told me to write it on a card and to carry the card in my pocket and read it as often as possible; at least every morning and every night. I didn't even know anyone with twenty-five thousand dollars. But what it did, and it took me years to figure this out, it caused me to start to think of earning money. Prior to that, I was thinking about debt. There's your polar opposite. When I was thinking of earning money, I wasn't thinking of debt. Then when I starting to think about [money], I started to hear people talking about it.

PR.com: It shifted your focus.

Bob Proctor: It did. It created a new awareness. I became aware that there were people talking about and that there were people earning money, and there were people earning a lot of money. Someone said that there was good money cleaning floors. I said, "I'm not proud. I'll clean floors." I had lots of time off from the fire department, so I started to clean one office and then another and then another. Pretty soon, I was earning a few thousand [dollars] a month. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Well, one day I passed out on the street [from exhaustion]. If you're one of those people that believe that hard work and honesty alone will bring riches, perish the thought, because it's not true. Riches come in responding to definite demands, based upon the application of definite principals, and not by chance or luck. I thought it was hard work. I worked myself into exhaustion, and I passed out in the street. So then I got all dressed up and I got other people cleaning offices. Pretty soon I was cleaning offices in Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Cleveland, Atlanta, London… and my income went over one million dollars. I realized that the secret to earning a lot of money is to have multiple sources of income. You don't trade time for money. That's the worst way to earn money! And that's what the masses do. That's what school teaches. 96% of our population trade time for money. It's a fool's game, because it's got an inherent problem. It's called saturation. You run out of time. So I started to learn things about money that school doesn't teach you. The secret to earning a lot of money is to multiply your time but setting up multiple sources of income.

PR.com: In other words, shifting your awareness will inspire a new way of thinking…

Bob Proctor: Wayne Dyer puts it very well. He says, "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change."

PR.com: And you also say in your seminars, that somebody once told you that in order to change your life, you need to change your life. Can you define that?

Bob Proctor: In other words, when talking about changing your life, you're talking about your results. You're talking about your income, how you spend your days, and who you spend your days with. Well in order to do that you have to change inside: your way of thinking, your feelings and your actions.

PR.com: Why and how did you change?

Bob Proctor: I changed because I changed the paradigm. I changed my conditioning. It took me nine years to figure it out. You're conditioned to operate the way you operate. You have ideas fixed in your subconscious mind. They're both genetic and environmental. You look like your relatives because of genetic conditioning. The form of your body and the structure of your features, that's genetic conditioning. That's in your gene pool, and it goes back generations. Once you're born, it's environmental conditioning. If you were raised in a home in the suburbs of Beijing, you would not be speaking English right now. You'd speak fluent Chinese. You're a linguistic genius at birth. You will learn the language of the people you're surrounded by. You will learn according to their level of awareness. You can teach a baby to read before it can talk. Now since most people don't know that, they're not doing it. But some do know that, and they're doing it. So we are conditioned mentally. People who are living on welfare are generally fourth or fifth generation welfare recipients. That is programming in our subconscious mind. Programming is nothing but ideas, through repetition, become fixed in the subconscious and when you put them all together it's called a paradigm.

PR.com: What is the difference between just positive thinking, versus what you do, in getting yourself into a positive vibration?

Bob Proctor: If you go back into proverbs in the Christian Bible, Solomon said, "As a man thinketh in his heart." Not as a man thinketh, but as a man thinketh in his heart. The subconscious mind, the early Greeks referred to as "the heart." As a person thinketh in their subconscious mind, so are they. There's a beautiful word, it's called Praxis. Praxis is the integration of belief with behavior. There are certain things you'll say, "I believe that," and yet your behavior would indicate that you've never heard of it. Pay attention to people when they say, "I believe that," but they don't do it. Why? On a conscious level they believe something. They consciously and intellectually understand it, but their paradigm is programmed the opposite way.

PR.com: How does one turn an intellectual connection into an emotional connection?

Bob Proctor: Through the repetition of presenting it to your emotional mind. There's only two ways to change a paradigm: one is an emotional impact. That's something just hitting you so hard, that your life will never be the same again. It's usually of a negative nature, but since everything is positive and negative, it can be a positive thing. That's when you're really jarred. The other way is through repetition. It's through the presenting of ideas over and over again. I remember as a little kid in school, if I was late for school, the teacher would have me write a hundred times, "I'm late for school. I'm late for school." What she didn't understand was that she was programming me to be late for school (laughs). Anything that you write over and over again, repeatedly, becomes fixed in the subconscious mind.

PR.com: (Laughs) I never thought of it that way. What is your opinion regarding the concept of traditional therapy, where somebody goes week after week and they vent to a therapist about the troubles in their life?

Bob Proctor: I think it's a gross waste of time. I think the therapist doesn't understand what the hell they're doing, which is the probable reason that there's such a high degree of suicide amongst them. And they are reinforcing the negative. I say, let it go! Overpower it with the positive! That's what I did. I'm happy, healthy and wealthy. I'm almost 73 years old. I've got more energy than most people 23. I've been around the world in the last week!

PR.com: How many countries have you been to in the past week?

Bob Proctor: Oh, I don't know; quite a few. Tomorrow I've got to be in Orlando for a meeting, then I've got to go from there to Phoenix the next day for a meeting, then I've got to come back to New York to tape Nightline and then back to Toronto. I think nothing of this. I mean it's just in a day's work.

(My conversation with Bob Proctor digressed, briefly, to the topic of constant motion and the anxiety that it produces, especially as it pertains to flying as well as the lack of downtime. At this point he made a jewel of a statement that will stay with me throughout my life as I think it is very wise. After listing to some reasons why I become anxious at the thought of my schedule becoming too packed, he simply replied, "I don't think we need to slow down. I think we need to calm down." I don't know why I had never before made this distinction, but there certainly is a distinction to be made.)

Bob Proctor: I stay in a very relaxed state. I don't let things throw me off. I am not the plaything for what's going on outside of me.

PR.com: So it seems that this all goes back to the images that you are holding in your mind.

Bob Proctor: Absolutely!

PR.com: Why do you think stress is such an epidemic?

Bob Proctor: Ignorance. People don't know who they are, and they're getting uptight. That thing you're living in, you call a body, is so tense. The body is supposed to be relaxed. I remember, Branch Rickey, he ran the Brooklyn Dodgers before they went to Los Angeles. He said that he didn't care how fast a guy could run or how well he could hit a ball, or how well he could throw the ball, or how well he could catch. He said, "If he wasn't as loose as ashes," he didn't want him on the team. Any professional sports coach will tell you that the person's got to be relaxed. That's the way we're supposed to live. When you are loose, energy flows freely through you. You're just a channel for spirit to operate through.

PR.com: How can people use the principles of The Secret to become more centered and eliminate stress in their lives?

Bob Proctor: To understand the principles of The Secret, we have to go back and understand ourselves. We're the ones that set up what we attract. I believe we have to gain an understanding of how the mind functions. There's a Doctor Mike in Florida. Both he and his wife, Susan, are psychiatrists. John Mike said that I taught him more about the mind in one year, than he had learned in 4 years of medical school and 5 years of psychiatric training. Here is a medical professional, a psychiatrist, who openly admitted they didn't teach him what I taught him. School does not teach us about who we are. So here we are, going around, and we don't know ourselves. And yet, you can teach this to a little kid. If you can teach a child the English language, you can certainly teach them how the mind functions. I have taught this to teenagers and the teenagers get it so fast, it would make your head spin! But, you see, the teenagers are making up their minds. We've got to change our mind.

PR.com: How can we change our vibrations, to create a body that feels loose and unstressed?

Bob Proctor: You would gain an understanding of how the mind functions, and then you would start going through exercises to re-program your subconscious mind. As you re-program your subconscious mind, you will see evidence of it in your material world; in your relationships, in the health that you enjoy. Now, am I doing [this] perfectly? No, because I'm not [always] aware. The more aware I become, the better I'm going to do.

PR.com: Would you say that positive visualization is a fair term?

Bob Proctor: Visualization will do it if you are visualizing the same thing over and over, and you are emotionally letting yourself get involved with it. I teach people to become actors. There's a wonderful book called, The Art of Acting by Stella Adler. She was Marlon Brando's teacher. It's the transcripts of classes she conducted, and living is really acting. If we would see how actors operate, they take a script and they read it and re-read it and memorize the script. Then they internalize the script, and then they become the script. Well that's what we have to do. We have to write our own script. "How do I really want to live?" And then we've got to internalize it and become it. When you watch great acting, they're not acting. They're living the part.

PR.com: So then in our own lives, we need to play the part that we want to be…

Bob Proctor: Absolutely… intellectually, emotionally, and physically. But you know where the real big hang up comes in? We're worried about what somebody else thinks. When you were a little girl, your mother would say, "What would the neighbors think?!" Well I found out… they don't (laughs).

PR.com: (Laughs) Exactly! Everyone is too wrapped up in their own lives.

Bob Proctor: The Secret is a phenomenon! And it's a phenomenon because it resonates with the soul. I believe you are a soul. I don't think you have one. I think you are one. And the soul is forever seeking its awareness of its oneness with what I refer to as God. And the more aware you become of your oneness with this wonderful and infinite, creative power, the more it's going to be reflected in your results.

PR.com: The film, The Secret, kind of found me. Several friends had mentioned it to me on more than one occasion, and I remember promising one friend I was going to watch it, but I was just paying lip service to it. Then I was invited to a viewing party for The Secret and I didn't go because I was busy that particular night. And then I met someone who did a psychic reading for me and he looked at me and he said, "There is a movie that I want you to watch, because I think it will help you. It can help you to literally start to change your life in a matter of minutes." He gave me the website address for The Secret and sent me on my way. (Click here to order your copy of The Secret). It was trippie. It kept showing up like a bad penny, until I finally sat down and watched it, and it really spoke to me. I'd never found anything like that before.

Bob Proctor: There's something in you that wants to grow. You're probably destined to do something really good; I mean really good work. This creative urge within you seeks expression with and through you, and this is almost like a key that opened that door. I know that's what it was with me, way back when I picked up that book. I have helped hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. I love it, and I'm going to do it until I die. This is a very complicated subject to teach, and I know very few people who know how to teach it. I don't know all the people on The Secret, so I don't know whether they can teach it or not. But I have been teaching this now for 38 years, and I've had some phenomenal teachers. The one thing I recognized when I saw it… Rhonda Byrne (producer of The Secret) has a genius. Her genius was in putting this together as she has. Her's is the creative mark that is on [The Secret].

PR.com: Do you know what caused Rhonda Burn to research this subject and to pursue it? Has she ever told you her story of why she put The Secret together?

Bob Proctor: She was in a bad way. She was not winning. And she was given the book, The Science of Getting Rich. That book did something to her, like [the book] Think and Grow Rich did with me. We have a program that we teach, and we teach the science of getting rich, and there is a science to it. People knock earning money. You can do a lot of good with money! It's the medium of exchange that we use for other people's products and services. Money is only used for two things: one is to make you comfortable, and the more comfortable you are, the more creative you can be. And the other is to extend the service that you render, far beyond your own presence. But, she was moved by that book. And I think if you had asked her while she was [producing The Secret], she couldn't tell you why. She just knew that she had to do it. I just hope she's strong enough to stand up to the criticism that she's having fired at her. But I would imagine she is.

PR.com: The backlash seems very recent and it appeared to unfold after Oprah talked about The Secret

Bob Proctor: The reaction is, people don't like being changed. We hear that people resist change. That's not true. People openly accept change when they decide to change. If I come along and said, "Allison, you have to do it this way," you'd probably react to that. You'd resist it. But if you decide to do it this way, then you adapt to it. Well, this is causing people to change and they're reacting. They don't like it. The truth is, this is waking people up in large numbers and it's not going to go away. You've heard the saying, "When you hear the truth, you'll know it." Well, there's a reason for that. It resonates with the soul.

PR.com: I saw that you were billed as 'A Philosopher' in the film…

Bob Proctor: That wasn't my call. I had to go look up what a philosopher is…

PR.com: Oh, because I was going to ask you that. How would you define a philosopher?

Bob Proctor: I don't call myself a philosopher, although, at times I guess I would be. It's a person that's searching for the truth through reason, rather than through scientific facts. You're searching through your own way of thinking, and you don't have to prove it to anybody. And you're sharing your views with people; usually sharing your thoughts. It's of an esoteric nature.

PR.com: It's funny because I was trying to figure it out. I know that when I was in college, you could take philosophy courses or major in it, and I thought, "Is it a job, or a career, or just a state of being?"

Bob Proctor: I think it's more of a mental state that you're in. There are people that just philosophize. They just talk about it and they never do anything. They never internalize the information. I am very high on internalizing it. I believe that learning is when you consciously entertain an idea, you get emotionally involved in that idea, you step out and act on the idea and you change the result. The feedback to your consciousness of the change in result… that's the learning experience.

(Bob points out to me the distinction in what he believes is the true learning process versus what school and traditional learning would have us believe. He describes the process of listening to and memorizing facts, followed by being tested on those facts by way of an exam, as a largely ineffective learning process, and one that most of us have become accustomed to.)

Bob Proctor: We're raised to live through our senses. We're raised to go by what we hear, see, smell, taste and touch. As little kids [we hear], "Will you look at what I'm showing you? Will you listen to what I'm telling you?" Then we go to school, and what do we get? We get a report card. The school sends home a piece of paper with information on it, and that's telling the parent, and telling the student what kind of a student they are. It's absurd! That tells everybody where the student's mind was at for a few minutes, maybe three weeks ago. But we're raised to let that piece of paper we call a report card, determine our self worth as a student. Then when we leave school, we are in the habit of doing this. We let the balance sheet, we let the sales sheet, and we let the x-ray tell us what's going on in our world. We're programmed to live from the outside in, but we're built to live from the inside out.

PR.com: One thing that I find a lot, and tell me if you agree, is that people who's true intention is to serve and to share something, oftentimes they reap huge financial benefits in the process.

Bob Proctor: Well, yeah. Money is a reward for service rendered. Money is an instrument. It's also a magnifier. Money will just make you more of what you already are.

PR.com: It's funny that you say that, because I'm working on an article entitled, "Money is a Magnifying Glass."

Bob Proctor: Rhonda Burn (producer of The Secret) was a nice person before she started to earn any money. I knew her when she had to borrow money to get the film out there. Well now that she's earning millions, I don't need to wonder what she's going to do. I know what she's going to do. She's going to do a lot of good with it.

Mammograms, how safe are they? An increasing number of doctors are contesting the claim that annual mammograms decrease women's risk of dying from breast cancer.

Danish researcher Dr. Peter Gotzsche first made this claim in a study published in "The Lancet" in October 2006. Gotzsche had re-analyzed the studies originally done on the benefits of mammograms and found them unconvincing.

Since then, other doctors have begun to assert that in addition to failing to offer protection, mammograms — which involve exposing patients to radiation —may actually increase women's risk of cancer.

"The latest evidence shifts the balance towards harm and away from benefits," said Dr. Michael Baum of University College in London.

According to Canadian columnist Dr. W. Gifford -Jones, women between the ages of 40 and 49 who have regular mammograms are twice as likely to die from breast cancer as women who are not screened.

"Experts say you have to screen 2,000 women for 10 years for one benefit," he wrote recently.

Gifford-Jones also points to other risks, from the physical to the psychological. According to some authorities, the squeezing of women's breasts during mammograms may rupture blood vessels, causing cancer to spread to other parts of the body and actually increasing a patient's risk of death.

He also pointed to the trauma suffered by women who receive false positives from their mammograms, and to the dangerous sense of security felt by those who receive false negatives.

Studies show that mammograms fail to detect cancer 30 percent of the time in women aged 40 to 49. In addition, it can take eight years before a breast tumor is large enough to detect, by which time the cancer could have spread to other parts of the body.

The leaves and petals of the Pot Marigold are edible, with the petals added to dishes as a garnish and in lieu of saffron. The leaves can be sweet but are more commonly bitter, and may be used as or as part of salad.

Flowers harvested between June and September are most potent.

Hot calendula tea helps soothe ulcers. Gargle with cool tea for inflamed tonsils or canker sores.

To make the tea:

-Pour 10 oz of boiling water over 2/3 cup of dried flowers and let steep for 15 minutes.

Or

-Add 5-10 drops of calendula tincture to a cup of hot water.


Ointment is used on scabs, eczema and psoriasis.

To make the ointment:

-Melt 1/2 cup of petroleum jelly over low heat in a double boiler

-Add a handful of dried calendula flowers

-Heat on low for an hour

-Strain out herb and pour into glass jar

Eating Watercress Found to Kill Cancer Cells

Scientists from University of Ulster have revealed that eating watercress daily can significantly reduce DNA damage to blood cells, which is considered to be an important trigger in the development of cancer. The research, carried out by a team from the University's Coleraine campus and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that in addition to reducing DNA damage, a daily portion of watercress also increased the ability of those cells to resist further DNA damage caused by free radicals.

The dietary trial involved 30 healthy men and 30 healthy women (including 30 smokers) eating an 85g bag (a cereal bowl full) of fresh watercress every day for eight weeks. The beneficial changes were greatest among the smokers. This may reflect the greater toxic burden or oxidative stress amongst the smokers, as smokers were also found to have significantly lower antioxidant levels at the start of the study compared to the non-smokers.

Professor Ian Rowland, who led the research project, said: 'Our findings are highly significant. Population studies have shown links between higher intakes of cruciferous vegetables like watercress, and a reduced risk of a number of cancers.

'However, such studies don't give direct information about causal effects. What makes this study unique is it involves people eating watercress in easily achievable amounts, to see what impact that might have on known bio-markers of cancer risk, such as DNA damage. Most studies to date have relied on tests conducted in test tubes or in animals, with chemicals derived from cruciferous vegetables.'

Professor Rowland added: 'Blood cell DNA damage is an indicator of whole body cancer risk, and, the results support the theory that consumption of watercress is linked to an overall reduced risk of cancer at various sites in the body. The nature of the study group also means that the results are applicable to the general population eating a normal diet.'

The single blind, randomized, crossover study was carried out with volunteers aged between 19 and 55. The volunteers ate one daily portion of watercress in addition to their normal diet.

The key findings of the watercress diet are as follows:

· significant reduction in DNA damage to lymphocytes (white blood cells), by 22.9 per cent.

· reduction in DNA damage to lymphocytes (white blood cells) when a sample was challenged with the free radical generating chemical hydrogen peroxide, by 9.4%

· reduction in blood triglyceride levels, by an average of 10%

· significant increase in blood levels of lutein and beta-carotene, which have antioxidant activity, by 100% and 33% respectively (higher intakes of lutein have also been associated with a lower incidence of eye diseases such as cataract and age-related macular degeneration).

Member Steve Rothwell commented: 'We have known for years that the special mustard oil in watercress, PEITC, has significant anticancer properties. But research on PEITC has been confined mainly to laboratory cultures or animal studies.

'This is groundbreaking research on two fronts: it suggests the anticancer properties of watercress go beyond those attributable to PEITC and, more importantly, the study is the first to demonstrate a direct correlation between eating watercress and reducing one's susceptibility to cancer'.

The confidence to run this study came from a large body of existing evidence which has demonstrated the anti-cancer potential of watercress, including a laboratory study with human colon cancer cells, run by the same research group.

Published in May 2006, the study showed for the first time that a watercress extract had beneficial effects on 'initiation', the DNA damage that triggers cancer cell development, 'proliferation' or uncontrolled growth of cancer cells, and 'metastasis', the spread of cancer cells. These are the three key stages of carcinogenesis, the process that results in cancer. Watercress extract was also shown to trigger cell death of cancerous calls - a process known as apoptosis.

TV presenter and survivor of bowel cancer Lynn Faulds Wood commented: 'The research from the University of Ulster is very interesting - it's great to know there are simple things that people can do - like eating watercress - which could help them avoid getting cancers like bowel cancer in the future. It's great that the watercress farmers want to raise awareness of bowel cancer, the commonest cancer in Europe. Thousands of people die unnecessarily of bowel cancer every year - with exercise and a good diet, many of them could live.'

Cultivated in pure spring water, watercress has been revered as a superfood down the centuries. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, is said to have located his first hospital close to a stream to ensure fresh watercress to help treat his patients. Greek soldiers were given it as a tonic before going into battle and the 16th Century herbalist Culpepper claimed it could cleanse the blood. It is brimming with more than 15 essential vitamins and minerals. Gram for gram, it contains more iron than spinach, more vitamin C than oranges and more calcium than milk.

Watercress is the UK's most historic salad leaf and in the 19th Century was a staple part of the working class diet, most often eaten for breakfast in a sandwich. If people were too poor to buy bread, then they ate it on its own, which is why it was sometimes known as 'poor man's bread.' Bunches were handheld and eaten ice-cream cone style - the first 'on the go food.'

Friendly reminder - eat more fruit and veg'

We all know that we're supposed to feast on at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, however most people don't eat nearly enough. On average, adults consume less than 3 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Having at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and veg each day has lots of health benefits, including reducing your chances of developing heart disease and some types of cancer. Try to make eating lots of fruit and veg a daily habit and try to:

- Add some sliced banana, apple, dried fruit or raisins to your breakfast cereal
- Drink a glass of fruit juice at breakfast time
- Keep some fruit handy for a mid-morning or afternoon snack
- Add tomato, peppers, carrots or lettuce to sandwiches
- Add vegetables to curries, soups, casseroles and pasta sauces
- Serve an extra vegetable or side salad with a meal
- Make a bowl of fruit salad for dessert

Remember that fresh, frozen, tinned, dried and juiced fruit and veg, ALL count towards your daily portions, but juice only counts as one portion a day, however much you drink. This is because you don't get the same nutritional benefits from juice as you get from the whole fruit and veg.

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins Hospital

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soya milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. The best water to drink: purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence,Essiac, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.

Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.

Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.

He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers.

This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body.

Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else.

Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food.

Crushed foot

A colleague had her foot run over by a car. It was crushed and badly bruised but not broken as the x-ray proved. Obviously it was both a shock and a bad bruise. What she did was to take ARNICA immediately and there was marked improvement within hours. The swelling came up and subsided rapidly and within a day of so most of the effects were minimal. Normally this would have taken many days to recover. There are two lessons here. You need to do the obvious and get it checked out physically. And ARNICA will speed the process.

Knocked over by car

A son of mine was very much without a road sense when he was 7 years old. He was just unreliable and needed close supervision near roads. One day a neighbor took him to see a special road event, and when she let go of his hand he dashed in front of a car. The driver stopped, my son was superficially bruised from head to foot. An X-Ray on his knee showed no fracture. I gave him ARNICA that afternoon and evening and kept a close eye on him, and he went to bed, woke up OK and happily went to school. We had anticipated a few days off recovering, seeing the extent of bruising. His road sense improved from then on!. So my conclusion was that while the ARNICA facilitated rapid healing, his still got the important message to be careful on roads. And there were no complications like nightmares or other fears that might be anticipated.

Knocked unconscious in a car accident

I was knocked unconscious when my car was hit at speed from the side. I came conscious while waiting in someones house for the ambulance. I quickly organized a homeopath to get to the hospital at speed. I was given ARNICA very quickly. Obviously they X-rayed me and checked me over before letting me go. The whiplash etc clearly needed help so the next day I called a chiropractor who didnt want to see me as my body would be in shock and he said its too early to put you back in shape. I said I am coming now, you can send me home if I am in shock. He checked me. My body was not in shock and so he was able to make the necessary adjustments. ARNICA had taken away the shock. It still took time for me to recover, as it was a major shakeup, my car was a write off etc. But ARNICA, I am sure, speeded the process.

Birth

Japanese Folktale. Long ago in a small, far away village, there was a place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door.
